Major
Music Education

How did you decide on a major?
I've loved music for as long as I can remember. When I entered high school my band director inspired me and became my biggest role model. I decided I wanted to give students the same opportunities he gave me.

What do you like or find most interesting about your major?
I think educators are one of the most important roles in our society. It would be an honor to help young minds in my community grow. Add music into that and it's like it was made for me.

What does earning your college degree/certificate mean to you as a first-generation college student?
Multiple family members have attempted college, but none have graduated. For me earning my degree means making my family proud. My dad dropped out of school in the seventh grade. I want him to know he gave me a good life where I can do big things.

Did you know what academic pathway you wanted to pursue when you started at YVC?
When I went to orientation I had no clue what I was doing. Thankfully, advisors got me in contact with the staff from Central Washington University so they could help me decide on the best pathway for me.

What made you interested in studying at YVC?
I was originally planning on attending Central Washington University in the fall. However, life happens, and I needed to stay closer to home. I was grateful that our community had a college that I could attend while I got my life together.

Extracurriculars (e.g., clubs, YVC sports teams)
YVC Choir

What three words would you use to describe YVC?
Peaceful, Community, Resourceful

What’s your favorite class? Why? How has it expanded your knowledge?
I loved Math 207! I have never enjoyed math in my life, but that class was so fun and it challenged me in a good way.

Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?
Steven Slusher [Music Instructor]. Being in his choir provided me with a comfortable and somewhat familiar space. I chose to continue his class through the next quarters.

What’s your favorite spot on campus?
Definitely Sopho's Mojo, it's so cozy and a great place to study, or chat with friends! Plus, the breakfast burritos are so good.

Were there any barriers you had to overcome to be successful at YVC? Please describe how you overcame these.
I was so clueless going into freshman orientation. Everything was so confusing, but I overcame my anxiety and just asked questions.

How has Â鶹ÊÓƵ changed you?
I feel like I've become easier going and learned to go with the flow.

Do you have a job? How do you work that into your schedule?
I do work study which is super convenient because it works around my school schedule, and is on campus. Then on weekends I work at Hoptown Pizza.

What do you view as your biggest achievement at YVC?
This winter 2025 is only my second quarter, but I am proud to have maintained a high GPA, and been invited to join YVC’s Chamber Choir.

Are there any support services or resources that you have taken advantage of? How have you found these beneficial? (e.g. tutoring, academic advising, library)
The Math Center was my savior last quarter! They helped me a ton.

Did you receive any financial aid or scholarship funding to attend YVC? If so, please describe how this helped you on your journey.
I am very grateful to receive FASFA [support]. Whatever doesn't get put towards my tuition, I save to help with my living expenses.

How do you find a sense of belonging at YVC (for example, activities or clubs that help you connect with students who share your interests or background)?
Everyone is super friendly. It's very easy to meet and connect with new people, even if it's just through classes.

What are your educational or career goals after YVC? What are your dreams?
I want to become a high school band director and share my passion of music.  Once I reach retirement age, I plan to open my own jazz club, possibly in San Diego!

What advice would you have for a friend considering whether to pursue college?
Don't be afraid to try new things. College is for some people and not for others.  However, it’s better to try and decide it's not for you, than never try and regret it later on.
