A comedy by Oliver Goldsmith, “She Stoops to Conquer” is considered one of the funniest drawing-room comedies ever written. The story follows a shy young man who, on his way to meet his intended bride for the first time, is misdirected. Mistakenly believing his betrothed's home is an inn, he confuses her father for the innkeeper and the young woman herself for a maid — misunderstandings that lead to a lively series of comic situations before everything is happily resolved.

First performed in London in 1773, the play remains a favorite in English literature and theatre classes and is one of the few plays from the 18th-century works still regularly performed. The play was performed once before at YVC in 1956.
