Associate in Arts – DTA ‘26
Hometown
Grandview
Major
Agricultural Biotechnology
How did you decide on a major?
Originally, I wanted to go to medical school but soon realized that, while I liked
the medical side, it wasn’t something I wanted to do for a full-time career. I did
however discover how much I enjoyed lab work which led me to my current path in agriculture.
What do you like or find most interesting about your major?
I find it interesting how important and relevant it is to Washington state and our
community.
What made you interested in studying at YVC through the Running Start Program?
My mom really encouraged me to participate in the Running Start program. I think she knew I was going to be able to handle it. I’ve really loved the experience
compared to high school and feel glad to be here.
Extracurriculars (e.g., clubs, YVC sports teams)
Medical Club at high school
What three words would you use to describe YVC?
Friendly, Exciting, New
What’s your favorite class? Why? How has it expanded your knowledge?
3D design with Monika Lemmon. It really helped open me up to how friendly college
is.
Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?
Harli Moran [Academic Success Coordinator]. I work with her closely and she’s helped guide me so I’ll be able to transfer after finishing at YVC.
What’s your favorite spot on campus?
The Writing Center in Grandview. I think this space definitely helps me manage my workload. I’ve also
made some great friends there.
Were there any barriers you overcome to be successful at YVC?
I had to overcome some social anxiety. At first, I was really nervous to talk to instructors
and ask for help. But everyone has been really friendly and it helped me open up.
How has 鶹Ƶ changed you?
In early high school I was kind of a troublemaker. Attending YVC has helped me mature
and figure out what I want.
Are there any support services or resources that you have taken advantage of? How
have you found these beneficial? (e.g. tutoring, academic advising, library)
The biggest resource I’ve used is the Writing Center.
How do you find a sense of belonging at YVC (for example, activities or clubs that
help you connect with students who share your interests or background)?
I’ve found support through my professors and tutors in the Writing Center. The tutors
have been very helpful, and I know consider them not only tutors, but friends.
What are your educational or career goals after YVC? What are your dreams?
I’d love to stay in the Pacific Northwest. I want to complete my degree at Washington
State University and find a career that involves lab work.
What advice would you have for a friend considering whether to pursue college?
Be honest with yourself. Be realistic with your expectations and abilities. Ask yourself
questions, like “Can I take online classes?” I’m only now learning for myself that
online classes don’t work well.
Do you have anything else you’d like to share with us about your experience at YVC?
One nice thing about YVC is it is adaptable to students needs.
