How did you decide on a major?
I've always known I wanted to go into healthcare. Growing up my dad was in the hospital a lot. Seeing that environment, I just kind
of wanted to lean towards that. I worked at a hospital a few years ago as a security
guard and got to see the background of everything. I realized I didn’t want to be
a nurse but liked radiology.
What does earning your college degree/certificate mean to you as a first-generation
college student?
Both my dad and brother have passed. I know that by earning a degree, I'll make them
proud of me. That is my main goal. To me, inside my head and my heart, I know that
when I walk down that stage, my dad's going to be watching me like, “that's my daughter
right there.â€
What made you interested in studying at YVC?
It's local and it's super close to home.
What three words would you use to describe YVC?
Friendly, Easy, Encouraging
Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?
Brenda Montoya Ramon [former pathway navigator]. She made the transition so smooth and made sure I was on track to get into the
classes I need and knew the prerequisites that I needed to take. Even when she had
to leave on a family emergency, she still made sure to check up on me and made sure
that I had everything I needed and made sure things were going OK. I really appreciated
how much she looked out for me and how much she showed that she was honestly trying
to help me get to where I was supposed to be.
How has Â鶹ÊÓƵ changed you?
It's definitely made me more organized and more disciplined. ±õ³Ù’s not high school
anymore, it's the real deal. And it made me appreciate being more focused on my work
and not having procrastination as an option.
What do you view as your biggest achievement at YVC?
Getting into college and taking the step to go towards my career. [In the past] I've
always just kind of said, I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it, and then pushed
it aside. I made sure I pushed myself to have a goal and deadline to get things done.
My deadline is March [to complete the prerequisites] for the radiology program. And
I'm really sticking to it.
Are there any support services or resources that you have taken advantage of? How
have you found these beneficial? (e.g. tutoring, academic advising, library)
I definitely use the library. When I needed a laptop, they were able to help me. ±õ³Ù’s also a quiet place to go
and study or do homework.
Did you receive any financial aid or scholarship funding to attend YVC? If so, please
describe how this helped you on your journey.
I am getting financial aid. That's the reason I'm able to do all of this. I also received a scholarship from
the YVC Foundation to transition [from earning my GED] to college courses, which actually helped me
pay for classes and purchase books.
How do you find a sense of belonging at YVC (for example, activities or clubs that
help you connect with students who share your interests or background)?
Right now in biology the group I sit with we have a group chat. If we were having a problem or if we have
a lab together, we make sure we text each other and help each other with problems.
What are your educational or career goals after YVC? What are your dreams?
I want to work in a clinical setting for radiology or in a hospital.
What advice would you have for a friend considering whether to pursue college?
Don't wait until the last minute. Don’t think you can't do it because you can do it.
Just go for it.
