How did you decide on a major?
I originally was set on becoming a music therapist and majoring in psychology. I always knew I wanted to go into a career that allowed me to work with children
and I've always felt a deep passion for choir and theater. As I went through high
school, I had some amazing teachers who really helped me grow into the person I am
today. After spending a significant amount of time with these people, I was really
touched by all the work they do. That is when I started to think about going into
education as my career instead. When trying to decide what type of education I wanted
to go into I knew immediately that elementary was the right [age] range for me.
What do you like or find most interesting about your major?
I can teach any grade kindergarten through 5th grade. I also think it is so interesting
that I will generally have the same group of kids for most of the day. I feel like
it allows me to grow a more personal and Influential relationship with the student.
What made you interested in studying at YVC?
What made me interested in studying at YVC is their partnership with Central Washington
University which will allow me to take my CWU classes from Yakima [after earning my
associate degree] if I end up deciding that I don't want to move all the way out to
Ellensburg.
Extracurriculars (e.g., clubs, YVC sports teams)
I am a member of the YVC Chorus led by Steven Slusher [music instructor]! We just had a [holiday pops] performance at the Capitol Theatre.
What three words would you use to describe YVC?
Exciting, Spontaneous, Comfortable
What’s your favorite class? Why? How has it expanded your knowledge?
My favorite class is choir because it's just like my home away from home on campus. The people are so nice and welcoming and it's just so much fun to make music with
them.
Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?
Sam Reyes, I consider her my mentor because she is my [], advisor on campus and she just makes me feel comfortable and like I can go to her
with any questions.
What’s your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot is the HUB [Hopf Union Building] because it's just super chill and
I love to meet up with all of my friends and hang out.
How has Â鶹ÊÓƵ changed you?
It has made me feel very smart. I wasn't very good at high school — the curriculum
was always so hard and confusing for me. But now I see that I wasn't dumb, high school
just wasn't for me.
What do you view as your biggest achievement at YVC?
Thus far I've only been here for a quarter, but I feel like my biggest achievement
so far has been performing with the Yakima Symphony Chorus at the Capitol Theater
and passing my finals!
Are there any support services or resources that you have taken advantage of? How
have you found these beneficial? (e.g. tutoring, academic advising, library)
I've used both College Success Foundation and the library! Great resources!
How do you find a sense of belonging at YVC (for example, activities or clubs that
help you connect with students who share your interests or background)?
I find my sense of belonging with my friends and my choir.
What are your educational or career goals after YVC? What are your dreams?
I am so excited to get out into the world and teach kids! Getting to teach children
is such an exciting thing because you are essentially shaping the way they think and view the world alongside their parents/guardians.
What advice would you have for a friend considering whether to pursue college?
Just because high school sucked doesn't mean college will! I was super bad at high school because I didn't care about all of the things they were trying to teach me.
But I love YVC because I am taking classes that I am actually interested in and that
I am working towards something bigger than myself.
