Business Administration

How did you decide on a major?
My whole family is in business, and I’d like to follow in their footsteps.

What do you like or find most interesting about your major?
What I find most interesting about my business major is the networking and the idea of starting from nothing and building something. That’s what really draws me in.

What made you interested in studying at YVC?
I wanted to get ahead of my classmates in high school, so I joined Running Start. I’m actually earning college credit as a student, and I guess what I enjoy most is getting ahead, graduating early and having the opportunity to plan and schedule my future sooner.

At my high school, they didn’t really encourage students to take on more work, and I think that affected me the most. The education level there felt limited compared to Â鶹ÊÓƵ, where I’m pushed to work harder and think outside the box more often.

Extracurriculars (e.g., clubs, YVC sports teams)
Grandview Student Council Vice President

What made you interested in participating in student life?
Socializing, having fun and getting my name out there by meeting new people — I feel like that’s really important.

What three words would you use to describe YVC?
Inclusive, Fun, Helpful

What’s your favorite class? Why? How has it expanded your knowledge?
My favorite class is English 101. It really helped me because I’ve struggled with speaking and reading. I’ve had a speech issue and my reading level was low — and I think I’ve improved a lot.

Who is your mentor on campus? Why do you consider this person your mentor?
Stephen Mock — he’s a math instructor. He’s mentored me by letting me sit in on his business classes and helping with advising at the Grandview Campus. He’s kept me on track with the business pathway and also tutors me, even though I’ve already taken some of his classes.

What’s your favorite spot on campus?
The Grandview Activity Center

Were there any barriers you overcame to be successful at YVC?
The biggest barrier I’ve encountered is putting in the work. I did fail a class a while back, but I took summer courses to catch up. That option is available to everyone, and it really helps. I think those were some of the barriers I’ve faced — just jumping through hoops and getting obstacles out of the way.

How has Â鶹ÊÓƵ changed you?
I think it’s helped me develop better time management and become more responsible with my assignments. Back in high school, I wasn’t really that responsible, but now I have to keep track of everything and stay on top of my work.

What do you view as your biggest achievement in student government at YVC?
I guess just making people happy here — helping them feel welcome. I think others see that vision and want to be more involved and attend more events. That’s a great achievement because it makes people want to be here and feel included in the school community.

Are there any support services or resources that you have taken advantage of? How have you found these beneficial? (e.g. tutoring, academic advising, library)
I’ve used the Math Center here in Grandview, and it’s helped me a lot. I used to go every day. Before that, I didn’t even know there was a student center that could support me. Now, I’ve been taking advantage of the extra help available for my classes.

How do you find a sense of belonging at YVC (for example, activities or clubs that help you connect with students who share your interests or background)?
I guess where I’m working now — in Student Life — I feel like I belong. It’s really helped me grow and improve as a person.

What are your educational or career goals after YVC? What are your dreams?
I want to transfer to UW and major in business with a minor in media. Eventually, I’d like to start my own business. I’m still figuring things out, but I have the flexibility right now to explore my options. I’m leaning toward something in media because I do photography, and that’s what I enjoy most.

What advice would you have for a friend considering whether to attend the Running Start program?
If I were to give advice, I’d say just do it. It really benefits you, and it’s fun. You have more time for yourself and can do more things. At my high school, you couldn’t leave whenever you wanted — everything was on a set schedule. But here at YVC, you have more control over your time. You can go to the gym or pursue other interests. So my advice is to go for it and choose a pathway that works for you.
