“YVC has made me less shy and more confident! Especially my role with ASYVC.â€

Degree/Certificate & Anticipated Class Year

Associate in Arts – DTA Psychology ‘25

Hometown
Hannover, Germany

Major
Psychology

How did you decide on a major?
I was originally interested in pursuing either education or pre-med. However, since medical school can be very expensive and I was not sure what subject I would teach, I decided to major in psychology. I enjoy learning about it, and it provides the flexibility to either teach it or go to medical school to become a psychiatrist.

What do you like or find most interesting about your major?
I really enjoy learning about humans and our behavior. There are so many reasons behind everything we do, and our bodies are equipped with various nerves that allow us to control ourselves. I also find the human brain really interesting, especially understanding what different parts of the brain are responsible for!

Are you a first-generation college student? If so, what does earning your college degree/certificate mean to you?
Being a first-generation student means a lot to me because getting to where I am now required a lot of hard work. As an international student, I had to leave my family behind in Germany and learn how to be on my own on the other side of the world. Even though it is tough at times, wanting to make everyone proud is what keeps me going.

What made you interested in studying at YVC?
I did an exchange year in Yakima [as a high school student], and I wanted to stay closer to my host family and friends because they helped me feel more like home. I also like having smaller classes here.

Extracurriculars (e.g., clubs, YVC sports teams)
ASYVC – Yakima Student Council President

What’s your favorite class?
Photography, it was really fun learning what I can do with my camera and how beautiful the pictures turn out once I knew how to actually use the camera. Seeing the final results of my pictures was really exciting!

What’s your favorite spot on campus?
The activity area in the Hopf Union Building.

Were there any barriers you overcame to be successful at YVC?
Yes, leaving my home country and family behind was a huge barrier for me. I miss them every single day. Excelling in my studies means a lot to me, but unfortunately, Germany doesn’t offer as many opportunities for higher education. It’s also really difficult to get into universities there, which is why I decided to return to the U.S. for school. Being an international student can be pretty tough, and I feel like not everyone realizes that.

How has Â鶹ÊÓƵ changed you?
YVC has made me less shy and more confident! Especially ASYVC. Since I joined ASYVC, I have become a lot more confident with speaking in front of people, especially a big group of people.

Do you have a job? How do you work that into your schedule?
Yes! I am the ASYVC Yakima Student Council President! [Student Life] is really flexible with our schedules so it’s usually not a problem.

What do you view as your biggest achievement at YVC?
Becoming the ASYVC Yakima Student Council President and being on the President’s List [Honor Roll] since the beginning of my time at YVC.

Did you receive any financial aid or scholarship funding to attend YVC?
The YVC Foundation scholarship has helped me with the funding since I have to pay my tuition all by myself and out of pocket.

What are your educational or career goals after YVC?
I want to go to medical school at some point.

What advice would you have for a friend considering whether to pursue college?
To take advantage of the support services at YVC.
