About Dr. Äặng

I came to the US as a Vietnamese refugee and grew up in Vancouver, WA.

After finishing my undergraduate education, I worked for the US Forest Service out of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest as a biological tech and also had the opportunity to work as a seasonal firefighter.

I then decided to join the Peace Corps and moved to Senegal where I lived for 2.5 years, most of which was in the small village of Segou. I worked in primarily as an Agriculture volunteer but also focused on small economic development, education, and health projects.

Following Peace Corps, I moved to Thailand where I worked in all levels of education, Kindergarten to College, in both private and public schools. While living there, I also opened a small school for low-income students in order to provide access in a highly privatized educational system.

I eventually repatriated back to the US and discovered the SBCTC system. I fell in love with the SBCTC system and worked as adjunct faculty before moving into administration to try to bring equity to students at the systemic level.

Over my time in the SBCTC system, I have held several positions ranging from adjunct faculty to Vice President of Instruction. I have overseen several programs/departments/divisions with a variety of specific student populations ranging from High School Dual Enrollment, Disengaged Youth, International Students, Basic Education for Adults, Workforce Education and even ran a special purpose high school reporting to OSPI.

Since joining the system, I've also earned an Ed.M. in Adult Education as well as an Ed.D. in Community College leadership. I truly believe in service and have spent a lifetime career pursuing this where I can. I am excited to serve here at YVC and the larger community of the Yakima Valley.
