About Kerrie
Kerrie Cavaness is a seasoned academic leader with more than 24 yrs of dedicated service to YVC. A committed advocate for student success, equity, and community engagement, she has advanced the mission of YVC as a Hispanic-Serving Institution supporting a diverse and largely first-generation student population.
Cavaness has held progressive leadership roles including adjunct faculty, Dean of College and Career Readiness, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Interim VP of Instruction. Her experience spans instructional and student support areas, providing a comprehensive understanding of academic programs, faculty development, and the needs of community college students.
As VP of Academic Affairs, she provides executive leadership for academic divisions and services, including Arts and Sciences; College and Career Readiness; Workforce and Economic Development; eLearning; Library and Media Services; and student academic support. She oversees degree and certificate programs, accreditation, academic planning, and equity initiatives, emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and student-centered learning.
Cavaness also brings extensive labor relations experience, overseeing employees across three bargaining units and supporting collective bargaining, shared governance, and effective resolution of workplace issues. Previously, as Dean of Arts and Sciences, she supervised over 100 faculty and staff, managed multi-million-dollar budgets, and led curriculum, faculty evaluation, and enrollment initiatives. Earlier, she expanded access and success for adult learners through innovative programming and partnerships.
She has served on multiple statewide councils and currently holds leadership roles on the Instruction Commission and Washington State Joint Transfer Council. She is a graduate of the Washington Executive Leadership Academy and is recognized for her collaborative leadership and commitment to inclusive, equitable education.
