Healthcare Program Clinical Relations

The YVC Clinical Relations office serves healthcare students by providing information about and facilitating clinical onboarding to organizations that partner with YVC for student clinical, externship and practicum experiences.

Clinical onboarding is the term used by programs and clinical partners for validating students’ information and preparedness to participate at a clinical site for their practicum, externship or clinical rotation. These requirements are outlined in the clinical affiliation agreements between YVC healthcare programs and our clinical partners. The requirements include immunizations, other tests related to immunizations, background checks, drug screening and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training.

Healthcare Program Participation Requirements

Immunizations

The healthcare program’s affiliation agreements with clinical, externship and practicum training sites require students to complete all required immunizations and tuberculosis (TB) screening as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for healthcare personnel. These requirements reduce the risk of exposure to communicable diseases for students and their patients/clients.

Immunizations are to remain current while students are enrolled in their healthcare program. Failure to maintain immunization status will affect enrollment status; students will not be able to participate in required clinical, externship or practicum courses if immunizations and CPR are not current. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all immunizations and/or proof of immunity documentation are submitted on time (prior to the start of the program — or at the beginning of Phlebotomy, Medical Assisting or Sterile Processing programs — and as required thereafter). No vaccine may be refused for personal reasons.

All costs related to immunizations, background checks, training and testing are the student’s responsibility.

YVC healthcare programs partner with Qualified First, a subsidiary of Verified Credentials, for immunization maintenance. Please refer to your specific program’s website for details.

The immunizations listed below are required by all healthcare programs at YVC. Students will need to visit the webpage for the program of interest for deadlines and requirements.

Vaccine Information about the requirement

Hepatitis B (Required)
Recombivax HB (HepA & HepB combined) Engerix-B or HEPLISAV-B

Recombivax HB (Hep A & Hep B combined) or Engerix-B

Documentation of three doses administered within the lifetime and a positive hepatitis B surface antibody titer (HBSAB)

The series of three injections must be given over a period of months. The second injection is administered one month after the first, with the third administered six months after the first.

Documentation must be in the student’s file proving the immunization has been completed prior to participation in the program. A positive Hepatitis B titer may be used to replace evidence of the immunization series.

HEPLISAV-B

Documentation of two doses administered within the lifetime.

The series of two injections must be given over a period of two months. The second injection is administered one month after the first shot. Documentation must be in the student’s file proving the immunization has been completed prior to participation in the program.

A positive Hepatitis B titer may be used to replace evidence of the immunization series.

Hepatitis B Titer (Required)

Hepatitis B Surface Antibody Blood test (HBSAB); must provide the lab report, for Hepatitis B demonstrating immunity.

If the titer is negative for immunity, a restart of the series is required, followed by a repeat of the Hepatitis B Surface Antibody Blood test, 30 days after the last shot in the repeated series.

Documentation demonstrating the restart of the series per the CDC guidelines must be included with titer results.

MMR (Required)

Documentation of two injections. If this documentation cannot be provided, then a serum titer must be done to demonstrate immunity. If any portion of the titer is negative, a booster is required, followed by a re-titer 30 days post booster, only for the portion of the MMR that the applicant had a negative result for.

Tetanus Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap) (Required)

Record of the inoculation within the last 8 years so it remains current and valid through your program completion (2 years after starting the program). If it expires prior to that a new Tdap will be required.

Tuberculosis (TB)
(PPD, T-spot, QuantiFERON Gold or Chest x-ray)
(Required)

Required once a year after the two-step baseline has been established. Evidence of three recent, current consecutive years of testing history is accepted in place of the two-step baseline, provided the PPDs have been done annually at the time when due.

Students with a positive PPD must have a chest x-ray to demonstrate that they are negative for active disease and provide documentation. Once a chest x-ray is performed, the student will complete an annual questionnaire in place of the PPD test.

Chest x-ray results must be within the last 5 years.

Students who have exposure to a patient with active TB will need a repeat PPD.

  • Format for PPd 2 step:
  • Date Administered/Date Read (48-72 hours after administered) and read results.
  • This is repeated 10 to 14 days later to provide a 2-step baseline.
  • In order to be valid, PPD records must demonstrate the date administered, the date read, and the read results.

T-spot or Quantiferron: If using a T-spot or Quantiferron blood test to satisfy this requirement it must be repeated annually. If a student returns to using the shot method, the PPD  2-step baseline must be re-established

Varicella (Required)

Provide proof of two dose inoculation, or serological blood titer lab results.

Flu (Required)

Proof of seasonal flu immunization.

Those individuals with a medical condition that prevents obtaining the flu shot will be asked to submit the medical documentation and may be required to wear a mask the full time they are in the clinical setting/rotation.

Immunization requirement deadlines are subject to the program they are seeking entry into. See Specific deadlines listed on the program of interest website
For the COVID Vaccine requirement please refer to the individual program websites

COVID

Two shot series if it is the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or one shot for the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

If an applicant has not received the initial Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson and Johnson vaccinations, after September of 2023, one bi-valent booster injection will satisfy the COVID vaccine as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for healthcare personnel.

Additional Requirements specific to the Nursing Program

Vaccine Information about the requirement

N95 Mask Fitting Nursing students must be fitted for an N95 mask. Only those admitted to the program will be provided with the specific information they will need for this testing. Total cost to the student the first year is $62 and the second year is $31. The Nursing department will provide one style of an approved mask for the mask fitting and clinical rotations.

  • : $55
  • that includes MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Tuberculosis (TB): $299

Background Checks & Drug Screening

Â鶹ÊÓƵ works with Verified Credentials Qualified First for the national background check. The background check is at the student’s expense. Information obtained from the background check will be considered in determining student eligibility to enter the program and/or complete clinical courses.

For any questions regarding the background check, or if you think there is something on your record that may have a negative impact on your ability to participate in the healthcare program you are trying to enter, please ask to meet with the director of the healthcare program you are wishing to enter.

Students seeking entry to a healthcare program at Â鶹ÊÓƵ are also required to complete a Washington State Patrol Background check.

The cost is $13 and is at the student’s expense.

Drug screening may be a part of your background check, depending on the program you are applying to or participating in. Those programs will have that information on their individual webpages.

These screens will be a part of the National Background check and lab used will be associated with Verified Credentials Qualified First.

Some clinical sites may require additional criminal history background checks and/or drug screens. These may or may not be at the student’s own expense.

Certifications and Site Requirements

Prior to entering the program(s) all students are required to obtain CPR/BLS certification, and CPR/BLS certification must be maintained throughout the program.

Clinical affiliation agreements require certification through the American Heart Association CPR/BLS for Healthcare Professionals.

(CPR training through a course for non-healthcare community members will not be accepted for this requirement.)

YVC healthcare programs partner with multiple community providers to offer learning experiences to students. These experiences reflect the profession that you have chosen.

One of our clinical partners requires students to have accounts with Health Streams My Clinical Exchange (mCE). The cost of this account is the responsibility of the student and pricing varies by length of the program.
