About Dr. Hernandez

Hello! My name is Olivia, or Dr. Hernández, and I have been an English Instructor at Â鶹ÊÓƵ since 2018. I grew up in Yakima and some of my favorite childhood memories are of coming to the YVC campus with my mom when she was a student here.

I was also once a Running Start Student at YVC. I didn’t actually finish my AA here, which is a big regret, but I was really close to it. I was lucky enough to take courses with many of the instructors who are now my colleagues.

I moved to Seattle after graduating from Davis and went to Seattle University for my undergraduate degree. For my graduate work at the University of Washington, I primarily studied Latine art and literature, with a focus on how to use these texts in the composition classroom. In 2023, I earned my PhD from the University of Washington with a dissertation about Chicana punk composition pedagogy.

I am very passionate and grateful for the work I get to do at YVC. I teach a range of classes here and always like to include a lot of different types of reading, including engaging with zines, games, comics, music, film, and television. I also try to include different modalities for assignments in my classes, so you might expect to do critical and persuasive written essays, along with more creative multimodal opportunities like videos, comics, zines, and podcasts.

Outside of school, I am a big nerd and love to talk about punk music, horror movies, comics and zines (again), and, of course, my dogs.
