About Monty
YVC has afforded me the liberty to spend my working life discussing, learning, and teaching others about topics that I deeply enjoy. Energizing students with my enthusiasm for these topics and seeing them become excited over new stories, information, and ways to view the world is a constant source of joy and rejuvenation.
Of the many skills students can learn in college courses, I focus on improving students’ reading skills, their ability to discuss new information, all while learning about the world that came before them and how the past created the world we now have. The cascade of benefits gained from reading complete texts and discussing what we read and thought is a foundational activity of an educated person.
My historical areas of interest are anything having to do with Europe, from most archaic times to the present, although much of my preference is for the pre-Christian world (ancient Greece, Rome, etc.). One of my major geographic concerns is climate change (not a happy topic). These interests are fulfilled through my enjoyment of reading. Other interests include cycling (watching professional races and going on rides myself), wood working, “fixing stuff”, gardening/landscaping, and listening to stoner/psych rock (Valley of the Sun, King Buffalo, Slomosa).
