About Dr. Perez
My name is Lysandra Pérez, and I am excited to serve as a tenure-track faculty member in Chican@ Studies at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. As a proud first-generation Chicana scholar from Yakima, I see my work here as a full-circle journey; I get to teach in the very community that shaped me. What I enjoy most about working at YVC is supporting students who, like me, carry with them their bicultural/multicultural and linguistic identities. I believe our languages, stories, and lived experiences are sources of strength that deserve to be uplifted in the classroom.
Students who take my classes can expect to see their voices and communities at the center of our learning. I encourage students to think critically about history, systems of oppression, and movements for justice, while also recognizing their own power as leaders and change-makers. My teaching connects critical theory with real-world practice, so that students leave not only with knowledge but also with the confidence to use it in their own lives and communities.
My scholarly interests focus on linguistic justice and equity in bilingual education. More personally, I am passionate about bridges between college and community, mentorship, and creating spaces of belonging. For me, teaching is not only about education, but it’s also about liberation, healing, and ensuring that students feel that their voices matter.
