About Joshua

My favorite thing about working at YVC, specifically in the Writing Center, is meeting such a variety of folks from different backgrounds, hearing their stories and ideas, and helping them kick the door to opportunity a little bit wider for themselves.

I particularly appreciate being part of a very people-oriented team. Our crew in Glenn Anthon 125 highly values making students feel welcome and emphasizing that they belong in this space and at YVC generally. That inclusive ethos resonates with some of my deepest values personally, and I enjoy contributing to it in my own way as part of the staff.

I also enjoy supporting students in their growing agency and confidence as writers. A lot of people that come in feel like they are “bad at writing” at first. Others like writing and have done it enough to feel good at it. Just about everyone is a little nervous about letting someone else into their composition process. Writing reflects its writer, so sharing it means putting a part of oneself out there for someone else to see—and maybe even judge or dismiss. I get to respond to that bold move with respect and take the writer’s thoughts and words seriously. I get to respond as a test reader and a fellow writer, communicating how their work makes me feel and think, asking questions, and sharing practices that I’ve found useful.

The one-to-one conversations about writing we do in the Writing Center have, by students’ own accounts, been very helpful. Of course, I enjoy being a part of that—seeing student writers get excited about their own ideas, break through walls of self-doubt, and make progress toward their goals—but our work is worthwhile for everyone at the table, not just me. Students should come check us out.
