About Dr. Shaw
I’m in my 30th year of teaching psychology at YVC, and I still find myself learning from students every quarter. I love working with people from different backgrounds who are trying to figure out their next steps. It’s an honor to be part of that process.
Before coming to YVC, I studied animal behavior and cognition, working with cross-fostered chimpanzees who learned American Sign Language. I continue that research today, exploring language development, empathy, fear, and intelligent behavior in both humans and nonhuman primates. More recently, I’ve become especially interested in how students build academic skills by learning to reflect, plan, and persist. I believe education should help us become better thinkers, better collaborators, and better versions of ourselves—not just better test takers.
Students sometimes tell me my classes are different. I think that’s because I try to meet people where they are and help them build toward where they want to be. Whether we’re talking about research methods, brain function, or how to study more effectively, I want students to understand why it matters—and to know they’re capable of growth.
Psychology is the study of behavior and mental life, and college is a great place to explore both. If you’d ever like to talk, I’m always happy to connect—just reach out to set up a quick Zoom or phone call.
