About Eric
With no clear educational goal in mind, and as a first generation student, I attended the local community college (North Idaho College in Coeur d’ Alene) mostly to play on the tennis team, while continuing to live at home where I could help out with our small farm. I grew-up obsessed with National Geographic magazine –especially articles about tribal peoples, archaeological sites and anything with a fossil (especially early human fossils).
I knew many of the researchers in the articles were anthropologists, but I didn’t really know how they became anthropologists. College was a mystery, so I was relieved to find anthropology courses available when I registered.
I am in my 37th year of teaching at YVC and still love introducing our wonderful students to a discipline that continues to captivate me. I have worked as an archaeologist and in bone identification and have conducted cultural anthropological research in the field.
My primary areas of interest include Youth Subcultures, Australian Aborigines, the Upper Paleolithic, and how hunters and gatherers conceptualize land. I just returned from Japan where I spent 52 days visiting Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples with an interest in how these religions influenced one another.
