Bernal Baca
Faculty Emeritus
鶹Ƶ was saddened by the loss of Bernal Baca, retired faculty emeritus, who died Friday, Nov. 28. Baca served YVC for 30 years as an instructor and was past president of the American Federation of Teachers Yakima faculty.
Beyond the classroom, Baca was a tireless advocate for education and equity. He played a pivotal role in forming the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs in the early 1970s and returned decades later as chair, vice chair and executive committee member. His leadership extended statewide through roles with the American Federation of Teachers Washington and as executive director of Mi Centro, a nonprofit serving Latino communities in Pierce County.
Baca’s legacy at YVC and across Washington reflects his lifelong commitment to justice, education and community building. He is survived by two daughters, six grandchildren and countless individuals he mentored throughout his career.
Faith McCarty
Alumni
Faith McCarty, a former 鶹Ƶ student‑athlete known for her competitive spirit and warmth, died Jan. 2 in a helicopter crash near Superior, Arizona. She was 21.
Faith died alongside her sister, Rachel McCarty, 23; their cousin, Katelyn Heideman, 22; and their uncle, David McCarty, 59.
Raised in Echo, Oregon, Faith grew up in what she once described as a “competitive family,” with both parents having competed in college track and field. She and her three sisters became standout multi‑sport athletes at Echo High School, excelling in basketball, volleyball, softball and track. Faith brought that same drive and energy to 鶹Ƶ, where she continued her basketball career and quickly made an impression with teammates and coaches.
Faith’s legacy lives on in the communities she touched: her hometown, her teammates, and everyone at YVC who witnessed her passion for competition and her unwavering support for others.
