Celebrating Veterans

On Nov. 11, 2005, Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Veterans Program rode in Yakima’s annual Veterans Day Parade on a float decorated with flags representing the five branches of the military service. Students handed out candy to the spectators, while four horses adorned in red, white and blue joined the festivities.
³Û³Õ°ä’s Veterans Program remains active today. In the past five years, more than 500 veterans and dependents have prepared for new careers though the program, which provides assistance and support for those using their benefits.
Textbooks to Africa

In December 2005, Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s student government collect more than 550 used textbooks during a book drive to help provide students in Africa with educational resources. Faculty also contributed by donating textbooks no longer needed for classes, including many the YVC Bookstore could not buy back.
The subjects requested included math, science, business and computer skills. Donation bins were placed on the Yakima and Grandview campuses, and student leaders counted and packaged the books.
YVC partnered with and for the effort. Better World Books sorted the donations while Books for Africa distributed the textbooks to schools and libraries across the continent.
